Three questions that must not be confused
UNHCR process
UNHCR receives and processes asylum applications in Thailand and may conduct refugee status determination. Registration or recognition does not itself create Thai immigration status.
National Screening Mechanism
The Royal Thai Government’s NSM is a separate domestic process for identifying people who may qualify for “Protected Person” status. UNHCR does not control its decisions.
Immigration status
A passport, visa, permission to stay, work authorization, bail condition, or immigration case is governed by Thai law. UNHCR documents are not visas.
Practical protection realities
- UNHCR’s current public guidance warns that a person without valid permission to stay can remain at risk of arrest or detention.
- Official processes can take substantial time and do not guarantee recognition, material assistance, or resettlement.
- A person may need different advice for asylum, the NSM, immigration, detention, health, education, housing, work, and family matters.
- Public discussion should not expose an individual’s location, documentation status, religion, political history, or family links.
Verify before taking action
Use current official pages rather than copied telephone numbers, email addresses, office hours, or form links. For urgent arrest or removal concerns, follow current UNHCR detention guidance and seek qualified local legal help. Operation Siam cannot determine status, provide a visa, stop an arrest, or promise a protection outcome.
