One person’s path through exile
Amnesty International Thailand wrote that “Dan,” a pseudonym, left a Dega village in the Central Highlands for Thailand at age 15 in January 2015. The article said his father was a Christian village leader facing official harassment and accusations involving national security. It also attributed to Dan serious allegations about his father’s later detention and mistreatment.
In Thailand, Amnesty reported that Dan undertook construction, road-cleaning, and coconut-shelling work to survive. Two years after arriving, he began studying English with a community volunteer and working as a paralegal for a refugee-relief organization. The article said he had been granted refugee status by the time it was published in May 2019.
Dan’s account gives human scale to the years between flight and a possible durable solution: precarious work, interrupted education, family separation, faith, and community service.
